This is a beautifully tailored vintage early 1950s era three piece suit, consisting of a jacket, waistcoat/vest and pants. The suit is made in a blue and muted brown stripe colored wool. The shoulders of the jacket are heavily padded and the lapels are notched and a little unusual for the period. The jacket has a three button closure and three buttons at the end of each sleeve. There is a flapped pocket at either side and a pocket at the left breast. The jacket is fully lined in charcoal gray satin fabric. It has two interior pockets. The pants are pleated and have a button-up fly and waist cinching tabs at either side. The vest has a five button closure. The suit is hand tailored - excellent quality.
Age: early 1950s
Label: None, but this suit is similar to another that I have that has an Alexandria, Egypt tailor’s label in it. This suit belonged to a former high jump champion of Egypt during the 1930s. It is one of a lot of 11 suits from the 40s and early 50s that he brought with him to Canada, after immigrating from Egypt.
Color: Grayish blue and muted brown stripe
Material: Wool. It is a quite heavyweight fabric, definitely a fall/winter suit. They don’t make fabric of this quality any longer and haven’t for some time. Falls beautifully due to weight and quality.
Sizing: No size is indicated, as it was custom tailored, but this should fit a medium to large size, probably a size 40/42. The jacket appears to fit a larger size, but the vest is sized for a medium - please rely on the following measurements for fit, taken from the exterior (please take the thickness of the wool into consideration) and note the sizing of the vest as opposed to the jacket:
Jacket:
Shoulders: 19 1/2” across shoulder seam-to-seam
Upper back: 17 1/2” across sleeve seams
Sleeves: 25 1/2” from shoulder seam
Sleeve Inseam: 16 1/2” long
Chest: 47” around, taken under the arms
Waist: 44” around
Overall length: 31", measured flat
Vest:
Chest: 40” around
Waist: 39” around
Length: 25” long
Pants:
Waist: 36”, uncinched by a belt and with the tabs fully let out
Leg Inseam: 32” long
Overall length: 43"
Condition:
This suit is in excellent condition with no wear, tear, stains or odors. There is one light brown spot on the waistband that looks like it would come out. Otherwise, this suit looks like it saw little, if any, use and was very well kept over the years.
This is a wonderful early 50s era suit - nice quality with great fit and style.....
